Marnie playing drum by firepit

The Day I Followed the Drum

New Year’s Day arrived gently this year—no rush, no fanfare. Just a mild late afternoon and a few warm coals glowing in our firepit. My husband had been pruning limbs earlier and decided to burn them down to embers. As I stood nearby on the front porch, I felt that familiar inward tug—the kind that doesn’t shout, but quietly insists.

The outdoors was calling.

Without overthinking it, I went inside and retrieved a Conga drum that hadn’t crossed my mind in ages. I rarely play it. In fact, I couldn’t remember the last time I had. Still, the nudge was clear, and I followed it.

I sat down by the fire and began to play.

Finding Stillness Through Rhythm

At first, the intention was simple. I could always use practice with rhythm. While I’ve played piano since childhood, counting has never been my greatest strength. So I chose an easy, steady beat—something consistent, something grounding. The kind of rhythm a group of musicians could rely on.

As the drumbeat continued, something unexpected happened.

My mind grew quiet.

The steady rhythm gave my thoughts a place to rest. Concerns from the day loosened their grip. The beat became an anchor—one that gently pulled me out of mental noise and into presence.

When Fire and Prayer Begin to Speak

My husband came back outside and added more limbs to the dark gray coals. They didn’t catch right away. He kept bringing kindling, testing whether the remaining heat would be enough to rekindle the fire.

As I kept drumming, I began to imagine the flames rising again—bright, alive, renewed. The image felt vivid and certain.

“Blow on it,” I said.

He did. After a couple of breaths, a flame reached up and caught hold of the kindling. He looked surprised, commenting that he’d assumed he’d need another match.

But the fire didn’t stay strong for long.

As the embers dimmed again, the rhythm continued—and something deeper stirred.

A Drumbeat That Became a Prayer

Without planning it, I began to sing—a simple chant, Native American in style, but Christ-centered in its heart.

“Yah—oh—Yah-wey—Yah-wey-oh-oh.”

As I sang the name of the God of the Old Testament and the Christ of the New, the drumming shifted from music into meditation. From meditation into prayer.

There were no spoken requests. No formal words. Just intention and invitation.

I imagined the Spirit of God moving in—fueling the fire, yes, but also sweeping across our property. Filling our home. Healing my family. Encircling everything we steward with His presence and protection.

The rhythm held steady. The chant continued. The invitation remained open.

And then—once again—the fire ignited.

When Heaven Answers in Quiet Ways

As the flames rose, there was a deep knowing—a peaceful assurance—that the prayer had been received. Not dramatically. Not loudly. But truly.

God’s presence felt near.

Sometimes answers arrive not through spectacle, but through alignment—when our hearts, actions, and attention move in quiet harmony with Him. A steady beat. A whispered name. A willing spirit.

A few days later, my husband came across an online notice for a drum circle and invited me to go with him. That experience deserves its own telling. But this moment—the fire, the drum, the song—felt like the beginning of something new.

A sacred rhythm set at the threshold of a new year.

Carrying the Rhythm Forward

God often speaks through subtle nudges—an impulse to step outside, to pick up something forgotten, to follow curiosity without knowing why. These moments may seem small, but they can open sacred space when we honor them.

The invitation is simple.

Listen.
Respond.
Trust the rhythm He sets before you.
