Spring Beauties and the Spade Miracle

Are you concerned about the future? Do you wonder if you’re prepared enough? Do you worry about details? This miracle that happened to me today will give you comfort and hope for the future.

I took a walk with my camera to do some birdwatching this morning. After I got to our field, I decided to press on to the creek and take more photos of a plant I was trying to identify. I needed more photos of its leaf structure to determine what it was.

As I drew close to the creek and entered the path to it, I noticed a large outcropping of Virginia spring beauties. Dave and I had noticed them on Sunday, and I dug one up with a stick to try eating the tuber. It tastes a bit like a turnip. The Native Americans used to roast them like potatoes. You’d have to be a fairy for these to be a sufficient baked potato. In fact, they’ve been called “fairy spuds.”

At this point, I remembered that I had forgotten my hand spade. I was a bit bummed, but decided I’d just have to come back later for the little tater tots.

I sat by the creek for a time with a prayer in my heart, “What message do you have for me today? Please send me something to convey a message I need to hear.”

I expected to see an unusual bird, animal, or vegetation. What I ended up seeing and receiving was a miracle. Some might say it was a mini-miracle because it wasn’t something I desperately needed. It wasn’t like Jesus healing a leper or restoring sight to the blind. But, this makes today’s miracle no less of a miracle.

Miracle and the Message

After leaving my spot by the creek, I made my way to our Intention Rock and then over to our Fairy Garden. As I approached the creek from the Fairy Garden, I saw four turtles sitting on a log in the water. Turtles symbolize longevity, perseverance, steadfastness, protection, home and retreat, healing, tranquility, earth and transformation. The number four has to do with systems – specifically having systems in place for your life. Unfortunately, the turtles scurried into the water before I could take a photo. Maybe my blue cap caught their eye.

I decided to head back to the house after this to prepare for an appointment. It was a little early, but I figured I’d give myself a little extra time. On my way through the wheat field adorned with yellow ragwort flowers, I came upon a bald spot in the field. There, lying in the middle of it, was a hand spade.

I did not recognize the hand spade as one we owned. It made no sense that it would be lying there. Perhaps Dave had one I didn’t know about. Either way, it was incredibly fortuitous that it would be lying there, close enough to trot back over and harvest some spring beauties.

I had the time, so I went back and gathered a few flowers and tubers. I loved the hand spade. The wood handle was a perfect fit for my hand. It was a good solid weight without being too heavy and made popping the flowers up very easy. It’s better than any hand spade I currently own.

When I got back to the house, I showed Dave the hand spade and asked if it was one I didn’t know he had. It was not his. He’d never seen it before. He commented on the quality of the hand spade and how nice it was. He said he’d been past that bald spot many times lately and never saw this hand spade lying smack in the middle of the open space.

I told him my gardening angels sent it. However it got there, it’s a mystery and the timing of it was perfect. The message I took away from this mini-miracle is that

  • God’s got me.
  • Even when I don’t think I have what I need, God will provide.
  • Even when I’m not in desperate need, God will provide.
  • If God can make a hand spade appear out of thin air so I can do something as simple as harvest spring beauty tubers, what else can He do?

Some days I’m concerned about what the future holds. Are we sufficiently prepared? Do we have our systems in place for an emergency or if something were to happen to the food chain? Have we thought of every contingency in a world that is getting more precarious by the day?

Remember those four turtles on the log? Four has to do with systems. And the turtles symbolize longevity, perseverance, steadfastness, protection, home and retreat, healing, tranquility, earth and transformation. We do retreats on our property. We are creating a place of tranquility and transformation and protection and peace, a place of healing and safety. We are plugging away with all the perseverance and steadfastness we can muster.

It seems to me that God is telling me, “Don’t worry about the future. You’re doing your best. If you forget something, I’ve got your back. I will provide! Even if I must make it appear out of thin air!”

“Have miracles ceased? Behold I say unto you, Nay; neither have angels ceased to minister unto the children of men.”
