It’s a Blue Bird Day: Blue Bird Animal Symbolism

I had a day to myself and decided to spend the morning doing some bird watching and photography. While I sat on our front porch, I got some beautiful photos of a bluebird scoping out one of our birdhouses for a nest. I took several photographs of the bluebird there before he moved over to our front yard to pose for me. Bluebirds represent happiness, contentment, and finding joy in the journey.

Great Blue Heron

Next, a Great Blue Heron flew along our boundary line, probably scoping out fish in the neighbor’s pond. It often takes that flight pattern throughout the morning and evenings. Great blue herons remind me that God is with me. The photos I got of the heron weren’t as great as many of the others I’ve taken. Two of my best great blue heron photos are on the cover of my book, “Finding Peace in a Turbulent World: Living in Sacred Nature” and on the accompanying “Living in Sacred Nature Journal/Planner.

Blue Jay Animal Symbolism

As I walked toward our field, I got some of the best photos I’ve ever taken of a blue jay in its natural habitat. Here are a few of the better ones. Blue jays live year-round here in Northwest Georgia, so I see them a lot, but they haven’t been easy for me to photograph in their natural habitat. Most of the photos I’ve taken have been at the bird feeder on our back deck.

Blue Jays are fearless, curious, resourceful, resilient, intelligent, brave and sometimes savage with their enemies. They are very protective, very social. They are known for their loud crow-like call. They can even imitate red-tailed hawks.

Blue Jays are the warning signals of nature. Their warning call alerts other birds and woodland creatures that a predator is near. They are not scared of humans. They’ll even follow you around, curious about what you’re up to. Blue Jays are loyal, they mate for life.

Blue Jays don’t overthink their nest location. They find a spot that will work and start building. No analysis paralysis with these birds.

Blue Jay Message: Speak out, stand up for yourself. Seize opportunities. Be fearless and curious. Be willing to defend others who need your help. Be strong and resilient and stand up for what is important to you. Blue Jays may be telling you that you are a person of influence. You’re here to be noticed. People look up to you. Make sure what you say and do is in harmony with your core values.

blue jay feathers - a little love note from Dave

A Love Note

I had the impression to stop by the Old Woman of the Woods (our pre-Civil War oak tree). To my delight, I found three blue jay feathers on the ground around the base of the oak. I learned later that they were a sweet love note from my thoughtful husband who had placed them in the bark of the tree, hoping I’d find them.

Bonus: Mating Red Shouldered Hawks

When I got out to the field, I spotted two red shouldered hawks in some kind of mating ritual. They circled one another for some time. It’s possible they were red-tailed hawks, but my Merlin app identified their cry as red-shouldered hawks. The photos I took are not conclusive, but I’ve seen red-shouldered in this area recently.

Hawks, in general, represent determination, courage and love, and forgiveness. They show up to tell us to keep going, stick with it, forgive those who might cause difficulty, but stay the course.

It was a beautiful morning. I’m so glad I took the time to enjoy the birds. What will you do today to enjoy nature? Nature has a wonderful power to heal us. If you’re stressed, anxious, or feeling blue, look for your own blue birds in nature!

You can learn more about the healing power of nature in my book, “Finding Peace in a Turbulent World: Living in Sacred Nature.”
