Being Your True Self Can Change the World
Your True Self is Compassionate, Self-Healing and Wise
Have you ever heard the story of the hundredth monkey? In a nutshell… the Japanese conducted an experiment in the 1950’s where they dropped sweet potatoes on sandy beaches of some islands. A young monkey learned to dunk his sweet potatoes in water to make them taste better. Others learned by watching the monkey. Then the adult monkeys on the island start doing it until all the monkeys on the island washed their sweet potatoes. And at some point, the knowledge spontaneously started hopping to other islands. That tipping point has been called “the hundredth monkey.”
This experiment illustrates that there is a collective consciousness that transmits wisdom without words, without watching, and without traditional forms of communication.
Are You Afraid to Stand Out?
I work with a lot of people who are afraid to truly be themselves, afraid to shine, afraid to be a “tall poppy” that draws attention to itself and gets whacked down, afraid of their inner critic or afraid of other people’s judgement. Or maybe they’re afraid if they shine, others will feel bad about themselves. Or maybe they feel like it’s being selfish to pursue their own interests, gifts and talents.
I believe that as you connect to your true self —- not some façade, coping mechanism — you add to the hundredth monkey effect. You impact the world for good simply by being you… your divine Self.
At the core, your Self is a divine, undamaged, unbroken, compassionate and wise divine soul. It intuitively knows how to heal the various aspects of yourself. Unfortunately, most of us don’t operate from it. We have limiting beliefs, past trauma, and coping mechanisms that distort the truth of who we are… and who others are. We have forgotten that we are children of God!
How to Tell If You’re Operating from Your True Self
If you’re not sure if you’re operating from your true self, ask yourself this question… “How compassionate am I to EVERYONE and to every part of myself? Even my enemies, even people society deems unenlightened, wrong, or judgmental? How curious am I to understand and extend compassion to everyone?”
This is something I’m working on and as I pray for that ability to see others and myself through Christ-like compassionate eyes, I have more minutes of my day connected to my True Self. I’m not perfect by a long shot, but I am progressing a little at a time toward a worthy goal.
And as I show up that way with my clients and others, I hope they learn that those sweet potatoes taste better when washed and that they’ll say, “I could try this too and see what happens.” And one day… maybe one day… the collective consciousness of this planet will shift from judgement, blame, and pain to understanding, personal responsibility, kindness and caring.
