Peacefully Overcoming the World

The world has gotten rather crazy these days. There’s a lot of contention, irreverence, crudeness and crime. But there are also a lot of really good people who do their best to love their families and serve others.

Many long for peace. They long for sane, common sense, and sound values to return. If our peace is at the mercy of the world changing, we’re in trouble. The good news is that peace is something we have the ability to find within ourselves regardless of what is going on in the world.

When Jesus came over 2000 years ago, the people of the time were hoping for a government leader who would overcome Rome for them. They wanted someone to be their King and build a wonderful kingdom.
Jesus came telling us that “the kingdom of God is within you.” Luke 17:21

He taught that overcoming the world wasn’t about controlling governments or fighting military battles.

“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.”

1 John 5:4

We don’t overcome the world by enforcing our will upon it. We overcome it by allowing God to transform us within. It is our faith in Him which gives us the peace that passes all understanding … that creates a peaceful inner world, springing forth with “living water” from within us so that we may never thirst.

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

John 4:14

We are wired for peace. God created us to have within us a peaceful kingdom that remains calm, confident and fulfilled even if the world around us is chaotic. We overcome the world from the inside. Isn’t that wonderful that we don’t have to wait for the entire world to change? We don’t have to wait for some governmental transformation. We simply need to align the divine within us with the Divine above.

Let’s claim the peace that the Prince of Peace offers. It’s available not just at Christmas but our whole lives through!
