Standing Strong in a World of Deception: Empowering Your Spirit Against Darkness

Many people today are struggling to feel a sense of security in a world rampant with deception and discord. Even if you try to keep your chin up and look for the good, the world’s darkness can dampen your spirits.

As a Certified SimplyALIGN Method™ Practitioner and a Christian coach, I’m seeing a common thread of openings happening in our energy systems—sort of like chinks in our armor of light—allowing the negative energies of the world to seep inside.

For example, a couple of months ago, I would awaken in the night, and my mind would start nesting on concerns about the future. I wasn’t bothered with negative thoughts during the day. I was studying scripture, thinking positively, but it was like at night, the walls came down and negativity was getting in.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve learned to quiet my mind at night through meditation, so I was surprised to be dealing with this again. Meditation wasn’t quite working for me. My mentor, Carolyn Cooper, Founder of the SimplyALIGN Method™, suggested I look for these openings in my energy system that were letting negativity in. Sure enough, there were several. She suggested that I make sure these were closed each evening before I went to bed. I did this and was immediately relieved from the monkey mind’s worrisome thoughts and slept through the night.

Even if you don’t know the SimplyALIGN Method™, you can pray as you lie down to sleep that any openings that let in negative energies be closed. There are also other ways you can help fortify your energy so that darkness doesn’t seep in and cause a troubled mind or downright misery.

Recognize the Darkness for What It Is

Many times we confuse negative influences, thoughts, and voices as something that is part of ourselves. Or we confuse negative thoughts and statements as truth. For example, we may confuse a thought that we aren’t good enough with being the truth, when really it’s a lie.

The first thing we need to do is recognize the darkness for what it is—the influence of the Adversary of our soul. Satan seeks to make us miserable like he is. His primary goal is to destroy the agency of mankind. He wants to back you into a corner where you feel like you have no way out, or that you’ve gone too far, or that everything is hopeless.

When you have thoughts and feelings of misery, hopelessness, powerlessness, or bondage, know that these are not from God. They are not truth. They are tools of the Adversary to steal your joy and make you miserable.

You Have Everything You Need to Defeat the Darkness

A 600 BC prophet spoke to his sons on his deathbed and gave them this advice:

“Wherefore, men and women are free according to the flesh, and all things are given to them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life through the great Mediator of all men [and women]. (Jesus Christ) or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself. And now, my sons, I would that ye should look to the great Mediator and hearken unto his commandments and be faithful unto his words and choose eternal life, according to the will of his Holy Spirit.” (2 Nephi 2:27-28)

From this, we learn important truths about overcoming the heaviness and darkness that can descend upon us at times.

  1. We have the ability to choose. We don’t have to keep entertaining these thoughts and feelings.
  2. We have all things given to us that are expedient for us. We have everything we need to defeat the Adversary.
  3. If we’re miserable, it’s Satan’s influence, not God, not ourselves, not truth.
  4. Look to Christ—the great Mediator. Hearken to His commandments and be faithful to His words.
  5. Choose eternal life by listening to the Holy Spirit.

Perilous Times Shall Come

2 Timothy 3:1 prophecies that “In the last days, perilous times shall come.” We live in those perilous times. “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:12)

Build Your Life Upon the Rock of Your Redeemer

Another father admonished his sons, “Remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation. When the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless woe, because of the Rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.” (Helaman 5:12)

There is power in the name of Jesus! Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” (John 16:23-24 ESV)

Watch and Pray Always

Jesus said, “Ye must watch and pray always lest ye enter into temptation for Satan desireth to have you that he may sift you as wheat. Therefore ye must always pray unto the Father in my name.” (3 Nephi 18:18-19, see also Luke 22:31-32)

“Pray always that you may come off conqueror, yea, that you may conquer Satan and that you may escape the hands of the servants of Satan that do uphold his work.” (Doctrine and Covenants 10:5)

Hearken to the Word of God

Another ancient prophet promised that, “Whoso would hearken unto the Word of God and would hold to it, they would never perish; neither could the temptation and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower them unto blindness to lead them away to destruction.” (1 Nephi 15:24)

“Yea, we see that whosoever will may lay hold upon the word of God, which is quick and powerful, which shall divide asunder all the cunning and snares and the wiles of the devil and lead the man of Christ in a strait and narrow course across that everlasting gulf of misery which is prepared to engulf the wicked and land their souls, yea, their immortal souls at the right hand of God in the kingdom of heaven to sit down with Abraham and Isaac and with Jacob and with all our holy fathers to go no more out.” (Helaman 2:29-30)

Be In the World, But Not of It

In his great Intercessory Prayer, Jesus made it clear that we can be in the world but not of it. This was his plea for us found in John 17:14-18.

Fill your life with good, and there will be no time or space for evil. Pour in light and truth, and the darkness and deception must flee. Light drives out darkness. Truth dispels deception. Spend as much of your time as you can filling your mind with truth and light, and the greatest source of that is the Word of God.

Cast Satan Out

When tempted on the mountain by Satan, Jesus didn’t engage with him. He didn’t reason with him. He said, “Get thee behind me, Satan” and then quoted scripture. Make the decision to cast Satan out and then use the power of the Word to slice through Satan’s darkness and deception. (See Luke 4:8)

We must use our God-given agency to choose the light and resist the darkness. As James 4:7-8 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double-minded.”

Put On the Whole Armor of God

Ephesians 6:10-18 is an excellent summary of what you can do to protect yourself. I recommend reading and praying this passage over yourself morning and night in the all-powerful name of Jesus Christ:

Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” (Ephesians 6:10-18)

Create this shield of protection using the whole armor of God over yourself, your family, your home, and your property. Most importantly, do what it says! Live in truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and fill your mind with the truths of salvation, prayer, and supplication for the Spirit.

Ask for and Have Faith in Angelic Protection

Finally, pray to be surrounded by angelic protection! As Elisha showed the young man, “Fear not: for they that be with [you] are more than they that be with them.” (2 Kings 6:16)
